Disable the Windows Key

This is a problem for some gamers that are annoyed every time they accidentally pressed the windows key while playing. This can also be used by Administrators who want to lock computers in secure environments (for example, demonstration workstations and kiosks) may need to disable the Windows keyboard commands found on the Microsoft Natural Keyboard and compatible keyboards. I'll show you two methods.

FIRST:

Copy the following (everything in the box) into notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

This is from microsoft's official site.
The following script used in conjunction with the Regini.exe utility from the resource kit disables the left and right Windows logo keys on the Microsoft Natural Keyboard and other compatible keyboards.

To disable all Windows keyboard shortcut keys, save the following text in a REGINI script called Disable_wins.ini in C:\. Run the script from the Windows NT command prompt(Type cmd in the run menu). For example, from the C:\> prompt, type regini disable_wins.ini. Restart the computer to make the changes take effect.

This will disable the feature in WinXP which tries to send a report to microsoft every time a program crashes.
STEPS:

Open Control Panel
Click on Preformance and Maintenance.
Click on System.
Then click on the Advanced tab
Click on the error reporting button on the bottom of the windows.
Select Disable error reporting.
Click OK

Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts

Create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown.

You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this:

shutdown -r -t 01 -c "Rebooting your PC"
Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message "Rebooting your PC." The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it.

Here are the parameters:

-s = Shuts down the PC.
-l = Logs off the current user.
-t nn =Indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action.
-c "messagetext" = Displays a message in the System Shutdown window. A maximum of 127 characters can be used. The message must be enclosed in quotation marks.
-f = Forces any running applications to shut down.
-r = Reboots the PC.

Change The Default Location For Installing Apps

As the size of hardrives increase, more people are using partitions to seperate and store groups of files.

XP uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.

Run the Registry Editor (regedit)and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default,this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.

From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc".
Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.
In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".
Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.
From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc".
Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".
Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.
Reboot your computer.

Instructions::

Copy the give code in a note pad and save the note pad in your pc with the name name.bat (that is with the extension of .bat). you can replace the name portion with anything u want.
*NOTE-- In place of password in the code given type your desired password.
A batch file will be created where you hav saved. Now double click on it , it will make a folder with the name locker at the same place where the batch file is save.
Now add the files you want to be locked in that folder.
Double click on the batch file. It will ask for locking the folder formed. Type y(yes). The folder will be locked and hidden.
To unlock,double click on batch file again and enter the password in the new window opened.

Windows XP Maintenance Tips

1. Reduce recycle bin size

Nowadays hard disks are pretty large, so the default 10% for the Recycle Bin is way too much. Most users would be OK with 5–10Gb, which will usually be from 2 to 5% of the hard drive space.

To reduce the size of your Recycle Bin do the following:
1. Go to Desktop
2. Right–click on the Recycle Bin icon
3. Select Properties
4. Use the slider to choose the required percentage
5. Click Apply, then click OK

2. Turn off Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance

Windows XP has services that make it possible for other people to access your computer remotely. They are handy if a computer is part of a network, but there is always a danger that hackers may use them to access your computer. So, if your PC is not part of a network, it’s best to turn them off. Here’s how:
1. Go to Start – Settings – Control Panel
2. Double-click the System icon
3. Select the Remote tab
4. Uncheck Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer
5. In the same tab click Advanced
6. Uncheck Allow users to connect remotely to this computer
7. Click Apply, then click OK

Don’t worry – you will be able to access MSN, Skype and other similar programs. Turning off Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop doesn’t affect them in any way.

3. Run Windows XP chkdsk (Check Disk) from time to time

Windows XP chkdsk is a tool that should be run from time to time. It will scan the disk for errors, fix logical errors, detect and mark bad sectors, so that Windows will no longer try to use them. This way it can prevent your computer from becoming unstable.

There is a slight disadvantage, though – Check Disk may require a lot of time to perform its task. It depends on many things, like overall PC speed, number of files and folders on the disk, amount of RAM, and disk size. So it’s best to run Check Disk only if you don’t need to use the computer for some time.

Also Windows XP chkdsk wants exclusive access to the computer. In most cases it will ask for a reboot and will run right after the reboot, so you won’t have access to your PC. Of course, you can always interrupt the process, but it’s not a good idea.

To run Check Disk do this:
1. Find the My Computer icon on your desktop and double-click it
2. Find the disk you want to check, right-click it and go to Properties
3. In the Properties dialog box go to Tools
4. Click Check now
5. A new dialog box will appear, check both options and click Start
6. Most likely you will get a message that Check Disk wants exclusive access to the disk and wants to start right after your reboot. Click OK
7. Restart your computer

4. Defrag regularly

Badly fragmented disks can cause a lot of problems, like general system slowdowns, slower startup and shutdowns, and even computer crashes. Basically, your hard drive is the slowest part of your computer and file fragmentation makes it even slower.

Windows has a built in Disk Defragmenter. To use it go to Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Defragmenter. Like any other defrag utility it gathers file fragments that are scattered all over your disk and writes them into adjacent clusters.

But to be honest, I never use Windows Disk Defrag – it takes quite some time to do its job and skips too many files.

The good news are that there are good free defrag utilities available for download. The ones I like are Auslogics DiskDefrag and Piriform Defraggler. Both are from trusted developers and do their job great. Personally, I like the Auslogics one better, because it doesn’t need time to analyze the disk, so it’s very fast.

When you login to any web site, Firefox offers to save your user name and password and when visit that page again , user name and password fields are auto completed for you. But it does not work on sites like Google, Yahoo, and others. To force Firefox to remember password of any site here's what to do.

STEPS :

Close any instance of Firefox
Go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components(Firefox installation folder)
OpennsLoginManager.jsusing notepad++ (easier) or any text editor
Find the line_isAutocompleteDisabled : function (element) {
Delete or comment these lines which can be found after the line in no.4 :

STEPS:

If you use XP Pro, follow steps 1 through 8 only. XP Home users begin at step 8.

Click Start and then click Run and type gpedit.msc and click OK
The Group Policy window will open. In the left pane, double-click Administrative Templates

Scroll down the list and double-click Turn Off Autoplay
In the Turn Off Autoplay Properties window, select Enabled. From the dropdown next to Turn Off Autoplay on, select All drives and then click OK then exit Group Policy
XP Home users will need to make the changes by editing the registry directly. To begin, click Startand then click Runand type regedit and click OK.
The left pane in the Registry window , navigate to:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
With Explorer highlighted, in the right-pane right click the value NoDriveTypeAutoRun and select Modify from the drop down menu. The base value will be set to Hexadecimal. If not, select Hexadecimal.
Type 95 and click OK.
Note that this will stop Autorun on removable/USB drives, but still allow it on CD ROM drives. If you want to disable autorun on both, substitute b5 for the 95.
Exit Registry Editor.
Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
